Social media FAQs…

Is Eggbox a ‘social media’ agency?

Yes and no. We have been online marketers since 1999 – the social web has created new opportunities and challenges, and our work has changed considerably. But we feel online marketing is still the best ‘big picture’ way of describing what we do.

Is all this ‘social media’ stuff just a fad?

Yes and no. Media has changed and is changing still. On the internet, whether we like it or not, lines are blurring between business and social. Soon, terms like ‘social media’ will be redundant. ‘Media’ will be many-faceted and ‘social’ will be one of the many aspects of marketing a business.

Is social media the same as viral marketing?

Not in our book. Apart from the negative connotations of the word ‘viral’ there’s also a distinct 20th century old-school feel about the phrase ‘viral marketing’. The social web isn’t about people ‘catching’ something that marketers have distributed, or being incentivised into passing it on. The key to getting talked about in a consistently positive light is to offer something useful and relevant to people over a period of time. The social web is for life, not just for advertising campaigns.
