Three jargon words that must go

Since we're now well into the era of 'Web 2.0' I thought I'd share with you my thoughts on defunct terminology! Let me know on the blog if you agree or disagree...

Traffic: I once worked for an online marketing agency whose idea of a groovy exhibition stand was a sort of toy town set of roads, cones and traffic signs. It's all about driving traffic to your site, geddit? Notice that it's the marketers doing the driving, using whatever means possible to get the (passive) punters to their clients’ websites. In a Web 2.0 world, the punters are rising up and taking control. They won’t be herded.

Users: Can you think of a single incidence of the word 'user', when applied to a human being, that doesn’t have unpleasant overtones? Someone who uses people, with no regard to their feelings? Someone who does drugs? Yet in internet parlance we still refer to 'users'. I'm all for usability if it means making websites easier and happier places to spend time (and money). But let's drop the users and talk about people.

Social: Uh oh, this is a new one – surely we can't throw it out yet? But there's something about the term that already irritates me, even though I was quick to start talking about 'social media' myself after realising its predecessor 'online community' was never going to be a winner. Social bookmarking, social networking, social media, social networks for social media types. Enough! Let's start an anti-social community. No, that's already been done: it's called the real world.

Three useful (and free) things to do with Google

If you haven't already explored the myriad tools available on Google, do it now. All you need is to sign up for a Google account. For example:
Google Notebook - great if you're researching on the web and want to clip stuff as you go
Google Local Business Centre - register your business and appear in local searches
Google Reader – keep track of blogs & news feeds
